Skype allows you to make phone calls over the internet, using a headset and computer. Calls to other Skype users are free. To do this, you download the software from skype.com, set up a free account, plug in your headset, add a friend, and begin the call. You can make calls to regular phones (land lines or or wireless) by paying for the service. You can also buy a phone number so that regular phones can call you on Skype.
Pastors and vision teams will need to learn to use Skype to communicate regularly with Tom Bandy. If you need help getting started, check out Skype’s online help or contact Allie Henson.
Tom Bandy’s Skype ID is tgbandy; Allie Henson’s is allienola.
We’ve already gotten some questions about headsets.
- Do I have to buy a headset? I already have a microphone.
- Yes, it is important to have a headset rather than a microphone and speakers. This reduces noise and improves call quality.
- What kind should I get?
- Many headsets state on their package that they are Skype compatible. You might want to stay away from the very cheapest options. Logitech is considered a good brand, reasonably priced, and widely available.
- Where can I buy a headset?
- Just about any electronics, office supply, or large department store. Sometimes you can even find them at drug stores or grocery stores.
- Do I need a fancy computer or high speed internet to run this program?
- No, but you will have a better experience with a broadband connection. If you are using dial up, you should avoid using other internet applications. Skype does have minimum requirements to run. See Skype’s online help for more details.
